Traveling Without Spending Anything, Is That Possible?

There are just so many places in the world that are waiting to be explored not just by frequent travelers, but by those who want to see what is out there. Travelling is not a mere pleasure that helps you get away from the hustle and bustle of life. It is a good source of learning and enrichment that can never be compensated by looking at magazines or browsing the Internet, though this is the first thing that you’d normally do before going anywhere.

Although planning for that much-needed break requires time and money, you need not spend a fortune to get to that destination that you’ve always wanted to visit on your bucket list. Believe it or not, there are ways that you could reach your travel goal if you’d be patient enough to prepare for your itinerary. All you need to do is to plan, set a timeline, make time, and you’re good to go. Here are some options that you can consider to get started:

Be a Tour Guide

Tour Guide

First of all, you need to be a good communicator. We’re not talking about having a perfect English, but you should be able to carry on a very good conversation in the most confident way possible. Second, you have to be the outgoing type of person who doesn’t mind getting out of your home or office and is ready to be on the field most of the day.

Finally, you have to want to be with people that you wouldn’t mind dealing with them no matter where they come from. What’s in it for you?  The assumption here is that you would target a location where you’d want to visit. That’s the perk that you would enjoy.

Earn Miles

Almost all major credit card companies offer a Frequent Flyer Program or mile-earning schemes that are quite competitive. Some are under the notion that you need to actually travel or fly to get mile points. Well, the reward program has evolved to cover the cardholder’s normal purchases, though the hitch is that the equivalent reward points require a higher purchase value. The solution? Use your credit card whenever you shop BUT be sure to pay your bills in full and on time. Remember, you’re in it for the points and not because you don’t have the cash to pay for your transactions.

Volunteering and cultural exchange

Countries pins

As the word implies, to volunteer means giving your time and services for free. When you enlist in Workaway for example, you get into a work/exchange program to do certain projects all over the world.

You don’t get any salary for the job, but all other expenses will be well taken care of. This arrangement is ideal for those who’d want to be at a certain place for quite some time, be immersed in the culture, and learn the language — for free.

Be an English Teacher

We’re not telling you to get a degree in English, but you do have to have at least decent English-speaking skills. The job of teaching English in a foreign land (of your choice of course) is not only profitable, but it obviously affords you the luxury of staying in a country where your services would be most needed. There’s a lot of available short courses online that you can take to qualify for the job. Best of all, not all countries require the teacher to have a certificate. You just need to pass some tests and an interview and voila — you can pack your bags and head for that destination!

Find a host

If you really want to explore the unknown and are prepared to live with real people, then you can try the Couchsurfing community. Here’s how it works: you find a host in a country who would be open to taking you in and offering you a free place to sleep. Since you’re being given the opportunity to stay without spending anything, you would want to reciprocate the generosity by offering to cook or any other errand to return the favor. You can also check out the Couchsurfing website should you want to touch base with local people and perhaps be a part of some of the activities.

Get a Cruise Line Job

It’s not exactly an easy way of traveling for free, but landing a cruise job is perhaps a guaranteed way of going to as many places as you could ever dream of. It pays very well, too, but if you’re someone who has a job waiting for him or left someone behind, then this is not the option for you. A cruise job is perfect for the someone with a wanderlust and doesn’t mind working long hours inside a huge liner. But you do get to meet different people from different nations.

If you’re up to trying any of these alternatives, then you’d surely experience what it would be like to travel without spending big buck that would put a dent in your savings.
